You and your fishing rod
Tuesday, 17 April 2007Of course, the right equipment counts as well. And this goes for your fishing rod.
And so, how do you get to pick the right fishing rod for you? There is not really any definite how-to when choosing the perfect fishing rod, because eventually, as you gain more experience in fishing, you will find out that the perfect fishing rod for you is one that feels right in your hand and works best with the way you fish. So, if you are still taking your baby steps to becoming an expert angler, a basic rod and reel will give you a good start.
However, when you start chalking up experience points in fishing, you will want to discard the basic fishing rod and go for something a lot more spiffy. How then should you choose your not-so-basic fishing rod?
First of all, consider what kind of fishing you will be going for. Do you intend to go to the seas in pursuit of your fishing, or are you going to stick to shallow waters? Fishing at sea can go rough, so you would want your fishing rod to be tough enough for the job.
Second, what species of fish will you be angling for? If you intend to go for the smaller species, a fishing rod that is four to six inches long will do. If you want to go for the big fish, only a long rod and a big bait will do, so your rod will have to be more than six inches long.
When you buy your fishing rod, do not be afraid to hold the rod and see how it feels in your hand. Does it feel too light, too heavy or just right? After checking the weight of the rod, try to make a cast to see how flexible the rod is. The more flexible the rod is, the better.
Fishing rods can be pretty expensive, so if you are not really into fishing yet, it is perfectly fine to buy a secondhand fishing rod rather than get one that is brand new. Anyhow, you can sell your fishing rods again once you have made up your mind on what will work for you.
It takes patience and attitude to get the hang of fishing, but it also begins with a good fishing rod. Get the right rod and enjoy your catch.
