Fishing Adventure in Big Bear Lake
Saturday, 14 April 2007The waters are stocked regularly throughout the whole year by the California Department of Fish & Game, so the lake is abundant with fish such as largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish, bluegill, pumpkin seed and rainbow trout. The largest rainbow trout caught on the lake weighed about 15 pounds, while the largest catfish ever hauled in weighed 28 pounds. The Big Bear Fishing Association also helps in stock trophy sized trout for contests and events held throughout the year.
Fishing in Big Bear Lake is done best during early morning or late evening, in early spring, fall and winter seasons. The Northshore and Gray’s Landing are the ideal spots for fishing. Most fishermen prefer to take out a boat and still-fish using a slip-bobber. Some would rather drift-fish or troll in deep water. Bass fishers fish in almost any weedy area along the Northshore as well. The Eagle Point and Boulder Bay area are also good spots, and it is here where you can catch bullheads, sunfish, crappie and bluegill in the shallow areas.
There are different strategies for fishing in Big Bear Lake, depending on the type of fish you intend to catch. Black crappies are usually caught with lead head jigs that come in a variety of colors. To catch a bluegill, anglers use a small hook and hang the bait from a bobber of fish in shallow areas. Carps are caught with PowerBait nuggets while smallmouth bass are lured by minnows, small crawfish, worms or flies. The largemouth bass and the rainbow trout are caught using almost the same bait: minnows, crawfish, worms and other smaller fish.
Other activities in Bear Lake include pleasure boating, water skiing, canoeing, parasailing or just take a romantic dinner cruise with your loved one. Swimming is discouraged though, as the waters tend to become very cold. The lake is open for fishing 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Virtually anybody and everybody can partake of the wonderful fishing experiences that Big Bear Lake has to offer.
