Clear Lake Bass Winter Fishing
Friday, 11 May 2007Once the cold season finally arrives, the bass fish at Clear Lake, the state’s biggest natural lake go through there yearly annual minnow bite. In case you run out of live minnows when bass fishing you can try using dead ones if you have some available. Minnows are so attractive to bass fish that if you put some in front of them, they will readily grab on it. Anglers in the area fish for minnows using two methods, which are the bottom drifting with a long split shot and drifting underneath the slip bobbers.
Drifting starts on the bottom of 20 to 28 feet of water away from Shag Rock, which is usually done early in the morning. Afterwards, anglers move to another water spot where fishing using bobber methods can be more prolific. Drifting the bait using a Loomis spinning rod should be done by letting the bait reach the bottom of the lake and try reeling it up to the top of the waters for a couple of times. You must leave the bait open for the fish to take and allow the line to be free once the fish takes on the bait.
January days can be cold and rainy, and if you are intending to catch some bass, you would probably have to content yourself with some average fish in terms of size and length before you can actually catch the large ones.
Why is it that bass fishing is so popular at Clear Lake to many California as well as out-of-state anglers during wintertime? Many of them would like to reason out that probably it is because the Clear Lake waters are quite shallow, which means that the bass do not have many choices of deep areas to go under during the cold winter, making them very easy catch.
Bass likewise feed at other lakes in the area. Fishing therefore is recommended at Wheeler Point, Henderson Point, Konocti Harbor, and other deep-water areas. Clear Lake do not boast of many deep water spots, while there are numerous deep water areas at the big impoundments in the foothill where bass can also be found.
