Bass Fishing in muddy water

Friday, 23 March 2007

The coming of spring, while welcomed by most people, can be daunting to the bass fisherman. Early spring means melting snow and rain, which then in turn means lakes filled with muddy water. Is it even possible for a recreational angler to catch something with all that mud in the lake?

The answer to that question is yes. No matter how dark and murky the water is, the bass will still get hungry and will still need to feed. The muddiness of the water also does not change the fact that the bass is an opportunistic feeder, and it will grab anything that it thinks is an easy catch.

What then should you do if you are raring to go fishing but the water in your fishing haunt is all full of mud? The answer to this question involves two steps. The first step is to keep sailing around the lake until you find a spot that is relatively clearer and less muddy than the others. Driving around the water to find a clear spot, especially if it has rained the previous day, can take some time. In that case, better make an earlier start if you are planning to go fishing after a day of rain. When you find a spot that seems clear enough for you, go ahead and cast your line.

If you fail to find a relatively clear spot after riding your boat across the water in search for it after an hour or so, do not lose hope. There is another option other than calling off the fishing trip and heading back home. This is where the second step to the solution comes in. The second step has something to do with the bait.

Anglers who have experienced the enjoyment of fishing at night know that low visibility for fish in the water is not a problem when trying to catch them. The key to managing a catch of bass despite the muddiness of the water is using the right bait. Having an attractive bait is a surefire way of luring the fish to bite. You can either use a crankbait or a plug with rattles that makes a bit of noise, which will make the fish home in to them. Or you can use a plug that make the bait move slowly and entice the fish. Spinnerbaits can also work, because spinnerbaits create vibrations in the water that attract the bass.

A true fisherman never lets muddy water ruin is anticipation of a good catch when fishing. Instead, he should look at it as a challenge, to see if he can get a good bass out after a day of fishing in muddy waters.
